What is Neuropsychology?
Neuropsychology is a branch of clinical psychology that specializes in the diagnostic assessment and treatment of patients with brain injury or neurocognitive deficits. Neuropsychology studies how the brain and nervous system affect how we function on a daily basis. A clinical neuropsychologist is a professional within the field of psychology with special expertise in the applied science of brain-behavior relationships.

Why have I been referred?

Most people see a neuropsychologist when their neurologist refers them for evaluation. Often, the referring doctor suspects a brain injury or condition may be impacting a person's cognitive functioning. Neuropsychological evaluations assist your doctors and/or other professionals in understanding how the different areas of your brain are working when there are indications and complaints involving memory or thinking. This may be signaled by a change in cognitive functioning.

What can I expect at an evaluation?

Evaluations will consist of an interview with Dr. Lee in which he will gather important information including your symptoms, medical history, medications and other significant factors. Interviews are typically followed by administration of tests, which are primarily questionnaires and pencil and paper type tests to better understand how the brain is functioning. Evaluations generally take several hours depending on the problem being assessed. Some tests will seem easy while others may seem more complex. Please bring reading glasses and hearing aids as needed. Get a good night’s rest before your evaluation and try your best.

Does Dr. Lee offer therapy or treatment?
While some neuropsychologists can do some cognitive rehabilitation themselves, it is most often referred out to other disciplines, including occupational and speech therapy. Dr. Lee will provide a detailed report of the evaluation results to your neurologists and other supporting providers on your care team.

What is being assessed?
Typical evaluations will also include administration of a battery of psychological tests that assess various cognitive skills, including, but not limited to:

● Intelligence
● Problem-solving skills
● Memory and learning
● Attention and concentration
● Reasoning and conceptualization abilities

From the information gathered during the evaluation, a neuropsychologist uses the individual’s pattern of strengths and weaknesses to assess brain functioning.
